HOW COOL IS THIS?
I’ve been receiving a lot of e-mails from teachers and librarians asking if I have any ideas for art projects their students can do based on my books. One of my favorite things when I arrive at a school for an author visit is to check out the artwork the kids have been doing.
IF YOU’RE READING PIE, how about making a diorama of Polly’s pie shop? Anna from Massachusetts sent me this wonderful picture of her vision of how the pie shop might look.
Dressing up is always fun. Check out this 1st grade teacher from Houston in her ELLA, OF COURSE costume.
Speaking of dressing up, if you’re reading GLAMOURPUSS don’t forget that humans aren’t the only ones who enjoy being glamorous.
If you’re reading HONEY, try making your own nail polish, have a nail polish party (boys invited!) or paint your fingernails to look like bees.
Feeling wild? Read IF I WERE A LION and then make paper plate animals.
After reading So B. It, have students draw a picture of their favorite scene, or fill a jar with jellybeans and see who can come the closest to guessing how many there are.
IF YOU’RE READING OGGIE COODER, chances are your kids are going to want to try “charving” for themselves. You can do it the Oggie way, with American cheese, or for your lactose intolerant charvers try soaking a corn tortilla in water to soften it. One clever teacher in Michigan came up with the idea of using cheese-colored styrofoam meat trays to simulate charging.
I bet that it was so much fun.
Absolutely!- SW
