Two eggs, please.

Overview

Illustrated by Betsy Lewin

At first the only thing the hungry customers at this bustling diner seem to have in common is a desire for “TWO EGGS, PLEASE!” But at the heart of this clever new look at similarities and differences by acclaimed author Sarah Weeks and Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator Betsy Lewin is an age-old truth — it’s what’s inside that counts.

“A thoroughly delightful treat for both early readers and young listeners.”
—SLJ

Author’s note: When my youngest son, Natty was in Kinder-garden at PS 87 in Manhattan, he had a wonderfully gifted teacher named Pat Martinez. One day, while visiting the class I saw her do an extraordinary thing. Ms. Martinez had the children sit in a circle on the rug. Then she took two eggs, one white and one brown, placed them in a bowl and passed it around. The children were asked to describe the eggs. Their comments focused on the differences – in color, in size, in shape, in the texture of the shells. Ms. Martinez then cracked the eggs into the bowl and passed that around. Again the children were asked to comment on what they saw. This time they talked about the fact that although the eggs were different on the outside, they were the same on the inside. It was such a simple and effective way of teaching an important social concept to young children that I just knew it had to be a picture book.

Ella, Of Course!

Overview

Illustrated by Doug Cushman

When Ella turned five, her grammy sent her a present. It was the most perfect umbrella in the world! So perfect, Ella couldn’t bear to be parted from it. That presented some problems at home, and at school, and especially in ballet class. What will Ella do if she can’t bring her lucky umbrella with her to the dance recital? Never underestimate the power of a little girl’s love – where there’s a will there’s always a way!

“Weeks’ short text includes lots of repetitive phrases and sound effects that will easily
encourage participation. Cushman adds slapstick humor with double-page scenes of determined Ella, an Everychild who takes blunders in stride and finds creative solutions.”

Sophie Peterman is here to tell you the truth about babies.

“Weeks has created a feisty, forthright protagonist who lays out the pros and cons of a new brother with delightful tongue-in-cheek detail. Woof, A Love Story

Overview

A dog is a dog, and a cat is a cat, and most of the time it’s as simple as that. . . . Or is it? What’s a dog to do when he falls in love with the cat next door? This humorous and heartfelt story is about the power of love and the power of music, told through the eyes of a lovelorn dog and the cat he adores.

“This affectionate and funny story is told almost musically, in rhythmic verse by expert storyteller Weeks. Berry’s exuberant collage illustrations spill over the pages, gorgeously chaotic and filled with heart.” SLJ (starred review)
